How vegetable tanning works
Vegetable tanning is a method that stabilizes the fibers in the hide through vegetable extracts. The goal is to prepare the skins for the leather goods industry. The vegetable extracts that treat the leather are known as tannins. They are extracted in either powder or liquid state from plants, woods, barks, pods, and leaves. The most common tannins come from oak trees, chestnut, and acacia.
80% of the tannins in our vegetable leathers are extracted from Acacia.
The vegetable method was the most popular way of tanning leather until the 20th century. The industrialization brought the chrome tanning which is easier, cheaper, and faster. This new method stole the spotlight from vegetable tanning. However, we can safely say that vegetable tanned leather is making a strong come back.

Besides the motives mentioned above, this is one of the reasons why only 10% of the leather produced in the world uses vegetable tanning. CHROME FREE
Crome is the most common heavy metal in leather tanning. Unfortunately, it is quite bad for human health. Vegetable leather is free of chrome (we have a study to prove it) and other heavy metals.
Therefore it is natural leather, ecologic, and free of cancer-inducing substances.
Breathable
Vegetable Leather is breathable.
It absorbs and releases humidity easily creating a comfortable experience to the wearer.
The wearer's skin stays dry, and the product remains with the same quality.
ANTIBACTERIAL
The tanning method creates on the leather surface an environment that is unsuitable for living bacteria.
Vegetable leather is both antiseptic and antioxidant which largely reduces the change of skin rashes and keeps bacteria away.
ECO-FRIENDLY
Vegetable tanned leather is a sustainable product. The lack of heavy metals and usage of strictly vegetable extracts make it recyclable. This tanning method reduces the amount of water needed by 50% when comparing to chrome tanning. Moreover, this product is zero waste as its residues are reused to produce fertilizers and cosmetics.
